Statement

I am captivated by the complexities of memory. How does its subconscious influence manifest? As a result, I find myself returning to certain ephemera again and again: the falling of rain, light shining through woods, summer evenings that stretch for ages . There is a tenderness to recollection, as if thumbing through old photographs to reclaim a moment long-since departed. Inevitably, the scene is distorted over time. Edges grow worn, details fade and are slowly replaced by an entirely different scene.

At times I feel to paint is to ground the present; if a moment can be captured, then its fleeting memory will not be lost to time. Or perhaps it is to reconcile this constant need to hold on, reaching out for an imagined home. The present is overtaken by lingering remnants of what once was.
